Wczoraj rozpoczął się kolejny QuakeCon czyli targi poświęcone produktom id Software. W tym roku John Carmack podtrzymuje tradycje i oddaje społeczności kolejną grę (a raczej dwie gry).
Tym razem padło na Return to Castle Wolfenstein oraz jego samodzielny dodatek Enemy Territory. Bardzo możliwe, iż udostępniając kod źródłowy John Carmack dał im drugą młodość (jeśli nie nieśmiertelność).
Do innych gier id Software, których kod źródłowy został udostępniony (np. Doom, Quake), do dzisiaj powstają modyfikacje i przeróbki silników, dzięki którym te gry wyglądają o wiele lepiej niż oryginalne wydania oraz jest możliwe ich bezproblemowe uruchomienie na najnowszych systemach operacyjnych.

Połowa graczy grało na spatchowanej wersji (VQ3), natomiast druga musiała zostać przy starej, bo modyfikacja gry nie działała z nowszą poprawką (CPMA). Obecnie scena VQ3 nie istnieje (wszyscy przerzucili się na Quake Live), natomiast niedobitki grają w CPMA.
Przykład drugi – Quakeworld (czyli Q1 na sterydach). Kod silnika jest dostępny, źródła map też są dostępne – w pełni wolnego klienta QW brak. Otóż id Software nie udostępniło tekstur. Podsumowując id Software zapewnia nieśmiertelność swoim silnikom, ale gry to zupełnie inna bajka. Chyba, że mówimy o powszechnym piraceniu plików z Q1/Q2/Q3 itd.
Nie widzę przeszkód. Tekstury przecież nie linkują z kodem źródłowym i vice versa.

Niech ktoś mnie oświeci. Ten RTCW single player to jest cała gra? Czy tylko engine? Jednym słowem czy gra będzie za darmo, tak żeby można było pograć?
Po rozmiarze archiwum (niecałe 4MB) widać że jest to sam kod źródłowy, a nigdzie nie znalazłem pełnej wersji RTCW, którą można legalnie pobrać. Wychodzi więc, że cała reszta nie została uwolniona. W innych uwolnionych grach jest podobnie tzn. wolny kod, a cała reszta jest płatna lub jako abandonware.

Enemy Territory to moja ulubiona gra sieciowa. Niestety ostatnio w nią nie gram – głównie z braku czasu, ale także zrażony przez niektóre jej niedoróby i grafikę coraz bardziej zostającą w tyle – teraz rychło się to poprawi.
id Software bodajże od momentu przeportowania przez społeczność (czy nawet jedną osobę) silnika Quake na Linux’a jest jedną z nielicznych firm wspierających natywne gry dla Linux – nie wiem czy warto z tego rezygnować.
Wiem… koszty opracowywania takiego uniwersalnego silnika! Ale przecież id Software reużywa swojego silnika w wielu produktach, a do tego sprzedaje licencje do komercyjnych produktów innych firm. Posiadanie takiej unisystemowej platformy jest dużym atutem i może właśnie dzięki temu firma zdobywa uznanie i sympatię i reklamę, a przy okazji może zarobić.

Ogólnie, to tak powinna wyglądać sprzedaż gier sieciowych. Płacisz za licencję, płacisz za grę na serwerze, a po paru latach źródła serwera są udostępniane publicznie.

Obecnie trwa dyskusja na temat zmiany licencji. ET zostało oddane na zasadach licencji GPL więc jeśli deweloperzy TC będą chcieli z tego skorzystać to będą musieli zmienić licencje gry (obecnie jest closed source).
Owszem nie muszą korzystać z kodu ET, ale wtedy ciągle by trzeba najpierw instalować ET a potem TC. Z czasem ET będzie coraz trudniej zainstalować (systemy operacyjne nie zatrzymają się w rozwoju dla jednej gry) więc na dłuższą metę muszą skorzystać z kodu ET żeby przetrwać. Poza tym wykorzystanie kodu ET zwiększa możliwości rozwoju TC (np TC może stać się w pełni samodzielną grą).
