Google News po raz pierwszy zaprezentowany został w kwietniu 2002 roku, oczywiście jako beta. Status testowy serwis porzucił w styczniu 2006. Po angielsku serwis obsługuje ponad 4.500 źródeł, dla polskiej wersji jest to 300 źródeł.
Serwis funkcjonuje bez ingerencji człowieka. Wyboru nagłówków, które się tam pojawią dokonują algorytmy komputerowe w oparciu o częstotliwość i miejsce występowania danego artykułu w Internecie.
Pomimo automatyzacji wyszukiwania informacji Google kilkukrotnie było oskarżane o nadużycia w przypadku agregacji informacji z różnych serwisów. Związane to było z faktem zamieszczania na własnej stronie Google News treści, których właścicielami nie było Google. Chodzi m.in. o sprawę z Agence France Presse, kiedy to Google zostało pozwane o 17,5 miliona dolarów za złamanie praw autorskich.
