Unia Europejska ukarała Microsoft grzywną w wysokości — bagatela — 899 milionów euro. To kara za nieprzestrzeganie regulacji antymonopolowych z marca 2004 roku.
Microsoft jest pierszą w historii firmą ukaraną przez UE za nieprzestrzeganie wcześniejszych wyroków. To również największa kara finansowa, jaką nałożyła kiedykolwiek Unia na pojedynczą firmę.
W marcu 2004 roku Unia Europejska ukarała Microsoft grzywną w wysokości 497 mln euro za praktyki monopolistyczne na rynku PC. Chodziło głównie o niechęć firmy do udostępniania dokumentacji własnych technologii, co uniemożliwiało zewnętrznym firmom i programistom open source pisanie aplikacji współpracujących z technologiami Microsoftu.
W lipcu 2006 za nieprzestrzeganie regulacji Unia zastosowała dodatkową karę 280 mln euro. Obecna kara jest sumą za okres między 21 lipcem 2006, a 21 październikiem 2007, w którym firma cały czas nie stosowała się do regulacji unijnych. W październiku 2007 UE uznała, że Microsoft w końcu zastosował się do decyzji z 2004 roku, stąd nie należy się spodziewać dalszych kar w tej sprawie.
Nie oznacza to jednak, że Microsoft może spać spokojnie. Obecnie toczy się już kilka kolejnych dochodzeń przeciwko firmie, m.in. w sprawie wykorzystywania dominującej pozycji na rynku pakietów biurowych.
Microsoft skomentował decyzję Brukseli, twierdząc że „został ukarany za stare i nieaktualne przewinienia”. W lutym tego roku Microsoft udostępnił wiele stron dokumentacji swoich produktów i zapowiedział, że nie będzie pozywał twórców open source. Unia odniosła się do tych zapowiedzi sceptycznie.

Coś mi się wydaje, że najważniejszym motywem Microsoftu do "wspołpracy" z Komisją jest coraz dojrzalsza konkurencja ze strony OpenOffice i Linuksa (jako alternatywna platfroma w firmach). Jezeli chodzi o komputery domowe widać to dobrze w pakiecie biurowym. Czy wczesniej MS zdecydowałby sie na przedaz swojego Offica za 199 zeta na trzy biurka? Albo dodawanie go do promocji neostrady w tpsa? Puszczenie za darmo Worksa? W interesie Microsoftu jest zapewnic sobie wiekszej interoperacyjność z alternatywnymi rozwiązaniami niż dopuścić zeby firmy wogóle zrezygnowału z korzystania z jakichkolwiek rozwiązań i technologi MS-a.
Mnie ta konkurencja bardzo cieszy. Nie dziwię się, że dopiero to skłania Microsoft do działania, bo to jest firma i prośby, ani ideologiczne gadki jej nie zachęcą. Tylko zdrowa konkurencja. To wychodzi na dobre tylko użytkownikom, na przykład mi. Chociażby, jak sam zauważyłeś, w obniżce cen.
może by tak w końcu ściągnęli z nich tą karę? ciągle tylko nakładają kolejne kary, a czy mikrosoft którąś z nich zapłacił?
Komisja Europejska jeszcze nie zwrocila sie z odpowiednia prosba do zadnej polskiej firmy windykacyjnej. Narazie proboja po dobroci
A mnie ciekawi co US zrobi z tą całą kasą jeżeli MS im w końcu zapłaci.

cały problem polega na tym, że to nie społeczność Wolnego Oprogramowania zmusza ciebie do używania Linuksa i Open Office'a, ale to właśnie tacy ludzie jak ty robią wszystko, żeby wszyscy na świecie byli zmuszeni do korzystania z programów Microsoft'u.

Monopol jest zły każdemu. Twój ukochany (jak widać) MS jest monopolistą. Dla Ciebie też jest dobrze jak MS nie jest monopolistą bo musi konkurować czyli przyśpieszyć rozwój swojego oprogramowania i obniżyć ceny. Dostaniesz lepszej jakości oprogramowanie ale firmie to się nie podoba bo muszą więcej pracować i dlatego bronią się przed tym jak mogą, a ty im w tym pomagasz! Walić kod źródłowy Windowsów (bo pewnie oglądałeś wiadomości na jedynce, a oni nie kumali o czym mówią), formaty plików powinny być otwarte (po to żebyś mógł skorzystać z programu konkurencji i by za 20 czy 50 lat wiadomo było jak to jest zapisane, itd), a to jak w programie jest przycisk napisany – mniejsza z tym. W oprogramowaniu bomby logiczne itp są wstawione? Kupujesz zamknięte = godzisz się na to.
