Niedawno ukończona gra Yo Frankie! stworzona w ramach projektu Apricot przez Instytut Blendera jest już dostępna dla wszystkich internautów.
Yo! Frankie (nazwa kodowa Apricot) jest open source’ową grą autorstwa Instytutu Blendera, który jest częścią Fundacji Blendera. Początkowo wydanie zaplanowane było na sierpień 2008 roku. Oparta jest na świecie i bohaterach występujących w open source’owym filmie wydanym przez Instytut Blendera – Big Buck Bunny. Tak, jak poprzednie otwarte projekty, gra została utworzona wykorzystując wolne oprogramowanie.
Yo Frankie! jest kolejnym dzieckiem Fundacji, świetnie promującym Blendera.
Tak jak zapowiadali twórcy – po dostarczeniu zamówionych w pierwszej kolejności płyt dvd gra została udostępniona dla wszystkich na licencji Creative Commons.
YoFrankie! jest grą multiplatformową działającą na systemach operacyjnych z rodzin Windows, GNU/Linux, oraz OSX. Aby umożliwić zabawę również posiadaczom nieco słabszych komputerów gra została wydana równolegle na dwóch silnikach:
– silnik Blendera (pełen wodotrysków, jednak bardziej zasobożerny)
– silnik CrystalSpace (nie odstępujący bardzo jakością, jednak mniej wymagający)
Aczkolwiek projekt Apricot (morela) to nie tylko gra. Wraz z nią twórcy udostępnili kod źródłowy, oraz wszystkie pliki edycyjne blendera składające się na grę.
Na tym jednak nie koniec, YoFrankie! został dołączony do Projektów Blendera, co oznacza iż zainteresowani mogą tworzyć nowe elementy gry takie jak mapy, tekstury czy postacie i wymieniać się nimi, a sama gra będzie wciąż poprawiana i udoskonalana razem z kolejnymi wersjami edytora Blender.

no cóż, to bardziej tech demo niż gra, ale chyba tak miało być?
Tak miało być i oczywiście wiedziałem, że bardziej kupuję "cegiełkę na rozwój fundacji Blendera" niż grę, ale liczyłem, że tam będzie gra choćby przeciętna. Nie żałuję wydanych pieniędzy, ale to nie zmienia faktu, że "gra" to to nie jest.

Może ktoś mi wytłumaczy, dlaczego link w oficjalnym downloadzie do wersji na silniku Crystal Space prowadzi do wersji beta sprzed 3 miesięcy? Ściągam co prawda wersję Blender Engine ale to nie to samo, będzie pewnie wolniej i nie tak ładnie.
A sorry, to wersja BE jest podobno ładniejsza, pomyłka.

Wszystko ładnie, pięknie tylko jak to uruchomić?
Ja odpalilem blendera, wczytalem do niego plik start_menu.blend ( katalog levels) i game->start game
U mnie na Ubuntu 8.04.1 nie działa, ale pokombinuje dalej.
Wersję blendera trzeba sobie skompilować.
Po ściągnięciu wersji Blender odpalamy w blenderze levels/start_menu.blend i klikamy File -> Save game as Runtime…
Gra się skompiluje i można grać.
Całą noc się ściągało (10-30 KB/s) ale po odpaleniu wersji blendera wygląa ładnie i jest grywalne. Będę się bawił więcej po pracy
