Jednak zwolennicy systemu starają się bronić OS/2 poprzez zbieranie podpisów pod petycją o uwolnienie całości bądź części jego kodu źródłowego. W odpowiedzi na petycję, serwis OS/2 World.com otrzymał list od wiceprezes Yvonne M. Perkins

Dziękuję za pański list i kontynuowanie propozycji otwarcia projektu OS/2.

Jak oświadczyliśmy w naszej odpowiedzi do pana we wrześniu 2005, w przeszłości już kilkakrotnie rozważaliśmy przejście OS/2 na Open Source, i z wielu biznesowych, technicznych i legalizacyjnych powodów zdecydowaliśmy się nie uwolnić projektu OS/2 jako Open Source.

IBM posiada różne usługi dla swoich klientów, którzy nadal potrzebują wsparcia dla OS/2, jednakże nie planujemy kontynuacji rozwijania tego produktu. IBM zaleca aby użytkownicy OS/2 rozważyli migrację na alternatywne rozwiązania, jak również posiada szeroki wybór oprogramowania i usług mających na celu pomóc w takiej migracji. Chcielibyśmy prosić, by zachęcał pan klientów którzy nadal planują migrację bądź tych którzy mają inne wymagania techniczne, by skontaktowali się z ich konsultantami IBM w celu omówienia w jaki sposób oprogramowanie i usługi mogą zostać wykorzystane.

      Napisała przecież: "z wielu biznesowych, technicznych i legalizacyjnych powodów". Obawiam się jednak, że najważniejsze to są te powody prawne; patenty, prawa innych osób i organizacji. Szkoda, że tak niematerialne i nietechniczne kwestie stoją w opozycji do rozwoju. Wiem, wiem, naginam trochę.

      nie bez znaczenia tez jest fakt ze bezpieczenstwo aplikacji rozwinietych przez klientow (np banki) byloby zagrozone w momencie otwarcia kodu systemu

        Nikt bankom nie każe udostępniać źródeł ich autorskich systemów zabezpieczeń. Jeśli jakaś firma robi system dla banku to bank jako klient powinien zarządzać źródeł, bo tylko to gwarantuje im niezależność i możliwość zachowania bezpieczeństwa wtedy gdy autor odmówi poprawki lub zniknie z rynku.

      Tylko po co? 10 lat temu OS/2 może coś ciekawego niósł, a teraz po co? Nie ma pod to żadnych programów, a sam system nie niesie nic ciekawego. Lepiej rozwijać coś przydatnego.

    Dlatego właśnie nie powinno sie używać zamkniętych rozwiązań. Jeżeli za coś płacimy to trzeba żądać źródeł, tylko one gwarantują nam wolność. Podobnie sytuacja wygląda z Microsoftem, który wiele firm pozostawił na lodzie porzucając np. rozwój MFC, czy zrywając kompatybilność ze starszymi wersjami oprogramowania. Problem ten tyczy się praktycznie każdego zamkniętego kodu, nie tylko od IBMa czy Microsoftu. Za wzór do naśladowania można podać firmę Sun Microsystems, która otwarła Solarisa, Javę i nawet swoje procesory.
    Jeśli oprogramowanie nie jest wolne nigdy nie możemy być pewni jego przyszłości, ani na tę przyszłość nie możemy wpłynąć.
